「証明写真は、いったい何を証明しているのか？」


澤田知子はこの問いを出発点に、社会が規定する「顔」の制度や、視線とアイデンティティの関係性を長年にわたり探究してきた。自身を被写体としたセルフポートレート作品群では、匿名性と同一性の境界を巧みに横断しながら、証明写真という制度そのものを内側から撹乱し、視覚の慣習に鋭く問いを投げかけてきた。

本展では、ヴィラ九条山の協力のもと、屋久島国際写真祭（YPF）より推薦され、フランス・パリでのアーティスト・イン・レジデンス滞在を経て制作された最新作《ID: Paris》シリーズを初公開する。プロジェクトの発端は、「もしパリで証明写真を撮ったならば、それは“フランス人である”ことを証明するのだろうか？」という素朴かつ根源的な問いにあった。証明写真は、外見を通して何を語り、何を社会に提出しているのか。あるいは、それを読み解く私たち自身の先入観や文化的想像力こそが、被写体の「意味」を規定してしまうのではないか。

澤田は、パンデミック以前から温めてきた本構想を、東アジア系の人々が多様に暮らすパリという都市空間で実践に移した。撮影されたポートレート群は、一見無機的な証明写真のフォーマットに収まりながらも、視線や姿勢のわずかな差異を通じて、自己意識と他者のまなざしが交錯する繊細な緊張の場を提示している。

屋久島で開催される本展は、この新作が一般に公開される初の機会となる。文化と制度、外見と内面を見つめ直す本シリーズは、澤田の一貫した視点に新たな地理的・社会的文脈を接続し、私たち自身が「顔」という表象を通じて、どのように見られ、どのように自己を構築しているのかを静かに問いかける。

“What does an ID photo truly prove?”
This question has long been the starting point for Tomoko Sawada’s practice, through which she has explored the systems that society imposes upon the “face,” as well as the complex relationship between gaze and identity. In her self-portrait series, where she makes herself both subject and object, Sawada has skillfully traversed the boundaries between anonymity and sameness, disrupting the very framework of the ID photograph from within and casting sharp questions upon the conventions of visual perception.

In this exhibition, her latest series ID: Paris will be unveiled for the first time. Created during an artist-in-residence stay in Paris—recommended by the Yakushima Photography Festival (YPF) and realized with the support of Villa Kujoyama—the project originates from a simple yet fundamental question: “If I were to have an ID photo taken in Paris, would it prove that I am French ?” What exactly does an ID photograph convey through outward appearance, and what is it that we submit to society when we present one? Or, conversely, might it be our own preconceptions and cultural imagination as viewers that ultimately dictate the “meaning” of the subject?

Conceived before the pandemic and later brought into practice in Paris, a city where many people of East Asian descent live in diverse ways, the series unfolds within the seemingly rigid and impersonal format of the ID photo. Yet, through subtle differences of gaze and posture, Sawada reveals a delicate tension in which self-awareness and the gaze of others intersect.

Presented in Yakushima, this exhibition marks the first public presentation of the series. By reconsidering the intersections of culture and system, appearance and inner life, ID: Paris connects Sawada’s consistent artistic inquiry to a new geographical and social context. It quietly challenges us to reflect on how, through the representation of the “face,” we are both seen by others and construct our own sense of self.

PROVE 

 

デビュー作品以降、外見と内面の関係をテーマに作品を展開してきましたが、2015年頃からは、何を見て人は人を判断するのかというコンセプトに特にフォーカスしています。 もし証明写真をパリで撮ったら、それは私がフランス人だと証明しますか？もちろんそん なことはありません。いくつかの国を訪れて感じたのは地域によって滞在している日本人の外見に違った特徴が見られるということ。パリで見かけた日本人にはパリに住む日本人という印象を受けました。何がそう思わせるのでしょうか？”ID: Paris”はアーティスト・ イン・レジデンス プログラムにおいてパリでリサーチ、制作した新作で、他の作品に比べ てリサーチ時間をとって制作しています。屋久島国際写真祭ではデビュー作の”ID400”と 新作”ID: Paris”の２シリーズで展示を構成し、”PROVE”とタイトルをつけました。

Since my debut, my work has consistently explored the relationship between outward appearance and inner identity. Around 2015, however, I began to focus more specifically on the question: by what criteria do we judge one another? If I were to take an ID photo in Paris, would it prove that I am French? Of course, it would not. What I have noticed in visiting several countries is that the appearance of Japanese people living abroad often seems to shift depending on the region. The Japanese individuals I encountered in Paris, for instance, gave me the impression of being distinctly “Parisians of Japanese origin.” What is it that leads us to such perceptions?

ID: Paris is a new body of work developed during an artist-in-residence program in Paris, where I engaged in extended research and production—taking more time in its preparation than in my earlier projects. At the Yakushima Photography Festival, I am presenting PROVE, an exhibition composed of two series: my debut work ID400 and this new work ID: Paris.
