「写真は、ただの記録ではない」——屋久島国際写真祭（YPF）が展開する「ファウンド・フォト・アーカイブス・プロジェクト（FPAP）」は、屋久島町内26集落に暮らす人々の家庭に眠る個人写真を収集し、地域の記憶と視点を「個から公へ」と開く取り組みです。本展「#5 永田」では、永田地区に残されたアルバムの中から、昭和前半に撮影された写真群を、永田公民館という公共の場で公開します。

展示されるのは、当時の風景や産業、暮らし、祭事、家族や子どもたちの日常を写した断片です。物資が乏しく、現在よりも往来も限られていた時代に、これらの写真が捉えた瞬間は、今を生きる私たちにもかけがえのない問いを投げかけてきます。個人のまなざしから生まれたイメージが集まり、地域の記録として編み直されることで、過去と現在を結ぶ新たな物語が静かに立ち上がります。

本展は、写真を「発見する」という行為そのものへと導きます。見知らぬ家庭のアルバムに眠っていた視線が、時を超えて私たちを見つめ返すとき、「この島の歴史と自分はどこで交差しているのか」という根源的な問いが立ち現れます。

本プロジェクトは、各集落の皆さまの協力なしには成立しません。FPAPは、写真を媒介として地域とYPFが繋がり合い、島に眠る記憶を共に掘り起こし、再発信する共同の営みです。屋久島の人びとへの深い感謝とともに、この展覧会が「共有される記憶」の場となることを願っています。​​

“Photography is more than mere record.” The Found Photo Archives Project (FPAP), developed by the Yakushima Photography Festival (YPF), is an ongoing initiative to collect personal photographs hidden away in the homes of residents across the island’s 26 settlements, opening up local memories and perspectives “from the personal to the public.”

This exhibition, #5 Nagata, presents for the first time in a public space—Nagata Community Center—a selection of photographs from albums preserved in the Nagata District, taken during the early Shōwa period. The images capture fragments of the era’s landscapes, industries, daily life, festivals, and the everyday moments of families and children. In a time of scarce resources and limited movement beyond the island, the moments recorded in these photographs still pose irreplaceable questions to us today. When images born from personal gazes are gathered and re-edited as a collective record, new stories quietly emerge, bridging the past and the present.

This exhibition invites visitors into the very act of “discovering” photographs. When the gaze once tucked away in a stranger’s family album looks back at us across time, we are confronted with a fundamental question: Where does the history of this island intersect with my own?

The project could not exist without the cooperation of each community. FPAP is a shared endeavor in which the local residents and YPF are connected through photography—together unearthing the island’s hidden memories and sending them out into the world once more. With deep gratitude to the people of Yakushima, we hope this exhibition becomes a place for “shared memory,” where the stories of the island can be experienced, reflected upon, and passed forward.
