写真家・渡部さとるは、夜と朝のあいだにほんのわずかに訪れる、色彩を持たない微細な時間に 「Noctchrome（ノクトクローム）」という名を与えた。古来より日本では、夜には目に見えぬ存在がばっこし、それらは夜明けとともに姿を消すと信じられてきた。しかし人工光に 包まれた現代都市において、こうした時間の境界は意識されることも稀である。 本展は、Leica Fotografie International（LFI）と屋久島国際写真祭（YPF）のコラボレーションによって実現したアーティスト・イン・レジデンス・プログラムにより、屋久島滞在中に制作された作品群を紹介するもの である。1949年に創刊されたLFIは、ドイツを拠点とする国際的な写真メディアであり、ライカを用いた写 真表現を通じて、世界各地の視点と感性を紹介している。本プロジェクトにより制作された「Noctchrome」 シリーズは、すでにLFIマガジンおよびLFIオンラインにて特集・掲載されており、本展を通じて日本の観者にも新たに開かれることとなる。夜明け前、渡部は小さな光だけを頼りに森の中を歩き、虫の声が止み、鳥 のさえずりが始まる瞬間を待ち続けた。Leica NoctiluxレンズとM10 Monochromボディにより撮影されたモノ クローム作品は、光と闇のわずかな揺らぎをとらえ、視覚を超えた「気配」や「時間の厚み」を静かに映し 出している。 会場となる志戸子ガジュマル公園は、屋久島北部に広がる亜熱帯の原生植生が息づき、太古の森の記憶がいまも生きる場所である。この空間と響き合うように展示される 「Noctchrome」は、見るという行為の本質と、自然と感覚のあわいに宿る詩的な気配を私たちに伝えてくれる。

Photographer Satoru Watanabe has given the name Noctchrome to the fleeting, colorless interval that arrives in the narrow space between night and morning. In Japan, it has long been believed that unseen presences roam freely during the night, vanishing with the break of dawn. Yet in modern cities, bathed in artificial light, such thresholds of time are rarely perceived.

This exhibition presents works created during Watanabe’s residency in Yakushima, made possible through a collaborative Artist-in-Residence program between Leica Fotografie International (LFI) and the Yakushima Photography Festival (YPF). Founded in 1949, LFI is an internationally renowned photography magazine based in Germany, dedicated to showcasing global perspectives and sensibilities through photographic expression with Leica cameras. The Noctchrome series produced through this project has already been featured in LFI Magazine and on LFI Online, and will now be unveiled to audiences in Japan for the first time.

Before dawn, Watanabe would walk into the forest guided only by the smallest traces of light, waiting for that instant when the insects’ chorus falls silent and the birds’ first songs begin. Captured using a Leica Noctilux lens and an M10 Monochrom body, these monochrome works record the subtle oscillations between light and darkness, quietly rendering the “presence” and “density of time” that lie beyond the visible.

The venue, Shitoko Banyan Tree Park, is located in the northern part of Yakushima and is home to subtropical primeval vegetation—an environment where the memory of ancient forests continues to breathe. Displayed in resonance with this space, Noctchrome invites viewers to reconsider the essence of seeing, revealing the poetic presences that dwell in the delicate space between nature and perception.

Noctchrome（ノクトクローム）

 

屋久島国際写真祭とライカフォトグラフィインターナショナル主催のアーティスト・イン・レジデンスで、私は「夜」と「朝」のあいだに立ち現れる、わずかな時間の気配を見つめようとした。

 

古来、日本では夜に禍々しいものが跋扈し、それらは夜明けとともに消えると信じられていた。しかし現代の都市生活では、夜と朝の境界は曖昧で、感じ取ることは難しい。この滞在で私は、森の中に入り、その境界線に身を置いてみたいと思った。

 

新月の夜明け前、まだ深い闇に包まれた森に分け入り、小さなライトの光だけを頼りに歩く。虫の音が途切れ、鳥のさえずりが聞こえ始めたとき、空と木々の境がうっすらと浮かび上がる。そこに広がるのは、色を持たない、静謐な世界だった。私はそのわずかな時間を「Noctchrome（ノクトクローム）」と名付けた。

 

これは、夜と朝のあいだにしか存在しない、移ろいの風景を記録したシリーズである。色を失った森の中で、光と音と匂いが交差する瞬間にシャッターを切る。モノクロームで構成されたこれらの写真は、視覚情報の先にある「気配」や「時間の層」をすくい上げる試みでもある。

During an artist residency on Yakushima Island, I set out to observe the fleeting moment that exists between night and day—a moment so subtle it often goes unnoticed.

 

In ancient Japan, it was believed that ominous spirits roamed the night and vanished with the break of dawn. In modern urban life, however, the boundary between night and morning has become blurred, almost imperceptible. On Yakushima, I entered the forest before sunrise, hoping to encounter that ambiguous threshold.

 

In the deep darkness of a new moon, I walked into the woods with only a small light to guide me. The moment the insects fell silent and the birds began to sing, the outline of the forest gradually emerged from the shadows. A world without color revealed itself. I named this fleeting monochromatic time “Noctchrome.”

 

This series captures the ephemeral landscapes that exist only between night and morning. In the forest devoid of color, I pressed the shutter in those moments when light, sound, and scent intersected. Rendered in monochrome, the photographs attempt to trace not only visible forms but also the layered presence of time and atmosphere.
