フランスのイラストレーター・グラフィックデザイナーである César Debargue と協働者の Luna Duchaufour‑Lawrance による展覧会『浮雲（Floating Clouds）』は、銭湯・温泉文化とそこに宿る視覚的・社会的記憶を探るプロジェクトの延長線上にある。Debargue は〈nuages flottants〉というシリーズを通じて、日本各地の銭湯や温泉を訪ね、人々の証言やノレン、タイル、壁画などのヴィジュアル素材を通じて浴場文化の美意識と歴史を掬い取ってきた。

本展は、屋久島滞在制作を通じて生まれた新たな思索と表現を導入するもの。尾之間温泉という温浴空間そのものが、制作の一部となり、展示空間と作品が浸潤し合うように構成されている。「浮雲」というタイトルは、湯気や蒸気、時間と記憶が曖昧に漂うさまを象徴し、身体と場所、過去と現在の境界を視覚的に宙吊りにする装置である。

映像・写真・グラフィックを横断するこれらの作品は、温泉にまつわる視覚文化と人びとのつながり、記憶の層を〈雲〉のように浮遊させながら、見る者を一つの儀式的な巡礼へと誘う。尾之間温泉で撮影され、展示もそこを舞台に行われることで、場所の時間性と空気感が作品と共鳴し、新たな経験的次元が立ち上がる。

本展は、ある特定の記録や資料を提示するというよりも、身体の記憶、社会の記憶、そして視覚の慣習そのものに問いを投げかける場所である。日常と聖性、現実とイメージ、存在と記憶が交差する空間に身を置きながら、『浮雲』は見ることと感じることの境目への柔らかな誘いを提供する。

French illustrator and graphic designer César Debargue, together with collaborator Luna Duchaufour‑Lawrance, presents Floating Clouds, a project that delves into the visual and social fabric of Japanese sentō and onsen culture. Through visits to public baths across Japan, Debargue has gathered memories and aesthetics—from noren banners to tile mosaics and wall frescoes—creating a visual archive of these spaces as communal and cultural artifacts.

This exhibition introduces a new chapter in the project developed during a residency on Yakushima. Onoaida Onsen itself becomes both location and collaborator: the exhibition space and the works coexist in a shared sensory environment. The title Floating Clouds evokes the ephemeral mingling of steam, time, and memory, suspending boundaries between body and place, past and present.

Blending image, video, and graphic design, the artworks activate visual traditions of bathing culture—allowing them to float like clouds of collective and lived memory. Filmed and displayed within the thermal environment of Onoaida Onsen, the works resonate with the ambient light, humidity, and atmosphere, creating an immersive experience where artwork and place inform each other.

Rather than presenting a fixed archive, this exhibition becomes a site of questioning—of personal memory, of social ritual, and of how visual conventions shape perception. Stepping into Floating Clouds is to enter a space where everyday life meets poetic ritual, where the line between viewing and feeling becomes porous. It is an invitation to sense the unseen textures between reality and imagination, presence and recollection.

フランスには存在しない日本特有の場所がある。それが「銭湯」。都心部によくあり、地域の住民が年齢を問わず集まり、裸でリラックスし、社交を楽しんだりする。

地方に多い温泉とは異なり、銭湯は日常の場で、詩的な空間が広がっているように感じる。単純に身体を綺麗にするのではなく、精神的な清浄をもたらす場所であり、日本の社会的なつながりに不可欠な役割を果たしている。家族や友人と一緒に入浴する時間を楽しむ場でもある。

一旦浴槽に入り、裸になることに対する恥ずかしさに慣れて初めて「裸の付き合い」を体験できる。言語の壁があっても、隣の人に話しかけやすい環境だ。

日本の暮らしに深く根差してきた銭湯だが、近年、大きな困難に直面している。経済的な問題や、経営者の高齢化といった要因が重なり、多くの銭湯が廃業に追い込まれ、その数は年々減少している。

銭湯の現状と衰退の原因をより深く理解するため、私たちは2022年秋に京都を訪れた。銭湯を維持し、その命脈を繋いでいる経営者、従業員、そして常連客の方々に会い、彼らの視点から銭湯文化を掘り下げた。本プロジェクトを通じて、日本の入浴文化に関する記録、普及、そして保存に貢献できればと考えている。

" There are places in Japan that have no equivalent in France: sentô. Unlike onsen—natural hot springs in rural areas—sentō are popular urban public baths located in the city center where, at the end of the day, people can meet up with family, friends, or neighbors to share a moment of relaxation and conviviality, separated between men and women. Much more than just places for washing and relaxation, sentō are essential to the Japanese social fabric.

Despite their deep roots in Japanese society, sentō are now facing major difficulties: aging infrastructure and managers, rising energy costs, new buildings with individual bathrooms... Forcing many establishments to close their doors every year. To better understand the decline and future challenges facing these establishments, we spent three months immersing ourselves in Japanese bath culture, meeting, interviewing, and photographing those who perpetuate and reinvent Sentô culture every day."
