一湊集落は屋久島の最北端に位置する古くからの漁業の集落。近海で獲れるサバやトビウオなどの漁業を中心に最盛期には 2800 人以上が暮らした。これまでの歴史の中で、大火と大洪水に見舞われ歴史を語る古い写真の焼失や流出があったが、集落のたゆまぬ努力により島内外から多く収集されている。

Isso Village is an ancient fishing village located at the northernmost tip of Yakushima. At its peak, more than 2,800 people lived there, mainly fishing for mackerel and flying fish caught in nearby waters. Throughout history, there have been great fires and floods that have destroyed or washed away old photographs that tell the story. However, many of them have been collected from inside and outside the island due to the persistent efforts of the village.
