安房集落は屋久島の東に位置し、古くより屋久杉の積出や漁業、航路の基地として船の発着に利用されて来た港町。中心を流れる安房川に沿い集落が形成される。聖域として神格化されていた森林の資源利用拡大が17世紀に始まり、以来 最盛を極め1923年には小杉谷集落から安房港まで森林軌道の敷設が行われ、重要産業として現在まで島の経済を支えるに至る。時代の変遷を見てきた集落のひとつ。

Anbo Village is located in the east of Yakushima, and has long been a port town that has been used as a base for shipping Yakusugi cedar, fishing, and shipping routes. Villages are formed along the Anbo River, which flows through the center. The forest, which had been deified as a sanctuary for nature worship, began to expand its resource use in the 17th century, and since then forestry has reached its peak. As an important industry, it continues to support the island's economy. One of the communities that has seen the changes of the times.
