長峰集落は屋久島の北東に位置し、終戦直後の1953年 国の開拓事業により始まった集落。山野を一から切り開き、20年に渡って進められた開拓事業により、最盛期には約800人の人々が暮らしていた。集落の中心にある石碑には「拓魂」の文字が刻まれ、今もなおその息吹が息づいている。

Nagamine Village is located in the northeast of Yakushima and was started in 1953 as part of a national development project right after World War II. At its peak, about 800 people lived in the area, a project that had been underway for 20 years to clear up the mountains and fields from scratch. The word “Takukon [ 拓 魂 ]” is engraved on a stone monument in the center of the village, and its spirit is still alive today.
